NEW AUDI S3 SPORTBACK
S-express upgrade brings significant handling tweaks and additional punch for more complete performance.
In our market where Audi Performance sales consistently outperform, the arrival of a new S3 is welcome news for hot hatch enthusiasts. As you know, the RS3 remains top dog in the category with its astonishing five-cylinder engine, strong character and flagship features. But for real-world driving where compliance matters more than track times, the less flamboyant, EA888-powered S3 Sportback typically fits the bill nicely. However this revised S3 moves the range sweetspot upmarket and nearer to the RS3 in terms of outright performance and desirability.
Few performance cars with well over 300 horsepower fly under the radar as effectively as this hatchback. Our stealthy test car was virtually all black apart from its 19-inch Audi Sport alloys. For the record, Mythos Black paintwork combines here with the Black Styling package ($1000 option) and a black over Rock Grey interior. The only other cost option fitted is the set of statement wheels in ‘multi-spoke S design’, although they’re branded RS on the rims. Add a further $2000 to the RRP and this car is $106,990 as presented. Again, nearer to what you once paid for an RS3.
It’s money well spent if you’re a very keen driver. Go about your business in Normal mode and you’ll appreciate the firm but compliant ride, the directness of the well weighted steering, smooth shifts and ample low-down torque. Extend things further on an open road and you discover a bit more urgency from the blown four and a broader spread to its delivery. But take to your favourite driving roads (or better still, a track), select the new Dynamic+ mode, and you can really exploit an RS3-derived rear differential with torque vectoring, a thoroughly uprated front axle, returned sports suspension and uprated brakes. You immediately notice crisper turn-in to fast bends and a flatter cornering stance. It feels a faster and more balanced car. And a new titanium sports exhaust tops things off with a suitably gruff note.
So Audi has really boosted the technical spec, giving the S3 serious sporting potential, but how much is actually usable on the road is a question buyers ought to consider.
If you like understated looks, then Mythos Black over black might be for you. The car’s visual character is enhanced by redesigned DRLs either side of a bigger grille with gaping air intakes. The sheer blackness of the test car disguises the more aggressive rear diffuser and quad exhausts, and even the badging is darkened for effect.
Arguably more appealing are the interior revisions with a slick new touchscreen system, an almost apologetic gear selector set in a gloss black console, and much broader chromed air vents. The front seats are spot-on, remaining as supportive and broadly adjustable as you would wish, but tall drivers would benefit from a bit more telescopic wheel adjustment. And one rear passenger will have little legroom when a tall driver is in charge.
Overall, a comprehensive and impressive update for a popular Audi Sport nameplate that could be all the performance car one actually needs.
