Our Nissan might be a bit on the portly side but the brawn of its big V6 does well to disguise the fact.
There’s no polite way of saying this: like our Keeper Mustang, the Zed’s BMI is getting up there. There’s not much we can do about it and there wasn't much Nissan could do about it, as the follow-up 370Z nudged 1500kg.
What brings the bulk into the spotlight is a blast in a contemporary Japanese sports coupe, like Toyota’s excellent GT86, or a Civic Type R hatch. Both weigh much less and can be flung around more readily.
At least the Zed’s upfront weight confers feel to the steering which feels especially meaty and consistent with fresh Bridgestone Potenzas fitted. And the brawn of the Zed’s engine is always something to savour, hitting a 2.0-litre boxer for six.
To recap, Nissan’s new-for-2007 motor (codenamed VQ35HR) breathes better and goes harder. It has a higher compression ratio, a flattened torque curve and delivers 25kW more than the first 350Z unit. Credit the longer con rods, dual intake manifolds and a wider range of operation for the variable valve timing. It also idles more smoothly but retains a determined mechanical growl at an extended top end. You can understand why it’s a big part of this car’s appeal.
