2013 PORSCHE BOXSTER S

Our Boxster S is a very rare thing: a car that scintillates but makes perfect sense at the same time.

The Porsche Boxster took a huge leap forward with the 981-series cars first introduced in 2012. For the first time the popular roadster adopted some suspension components from the 911 (front track is 40mm wider) and the Boxster S gained a slightly detuned version of the Carrera’s 3.4-litre direct-injection flat-six. S badging and a manual gearbox denote a brilliantly accomplished and involving machine, making it the one to have. This model is so finely fettled that you need over 300 horsepower to scratch its dynamic surface.
The visceral joy of the non-turbo motor and the physical involvement of the six-speed manual gearbox make for a brilliant performance, while overall quality and practicality (two luggage compartments) are beyond reproach. The timeless styling is preferred by some to that of the subsequent 718 with its turbocharged fours.
Our car lives up to the hype because the gearing allows you to really enjoy the engine, the manual ’box is so satisfying to use and the car’s delicate balance is always apparent. The ability to quickly drop the roof when weather allows quickly made us Boxster converts.
As you can see, this dark-blue metallic car features a navy hood and 20-inch Carrera S alloys. The roll hoops are optioned in alloy effect to match the wheels. This theme continues in the full-leather cabin with alloy inlays, door latches and electric seat adjusters for the upgraded sports seats. The ultimate soundtrack comes from the optional Porsche Tequipment sports exhaust fitted. Select Sport mode and the S becomes a very expressive character. Otherwise, enjoy refined cruising with quality sounds from the Bose audio system.
Other plus-points which drew us to this example were its single previous owner (a serial Boxster buyer), superb condition reflecting its very low mileage (25,000km), a full Porsche service history, and peace of mind from buying under the Porsche Approved scheme.
It’s no surprise that this car slips into your life with relative ease yet each drive feels very special. Compared with open-topped 911s, value for money is noteworthy; the 981 Boxster S must be one of the best-value Porsches of recent times. No wonder the best manual cars are very tightly held and it took so long to source this one.
