2016 FORD MUSTANG GT
We played it safe when specifying our 5.0-litre Fastback. Keeping things simple seems to have paid dividends.
The original Mustang is one of the most popular and recognisable American classics. But not too many post-60s ponies (with the exception of a few fearsome returns to form) have had us drooling at the chops.
That changed about three years ago. A fresh, forthright design and a big-cube V8 saw us charting a course for the showroom. Because the new model had been engineered for RHD markets, in line with Ford’s global push, we added to the stampede of orders for a Fastback 5.0 and counted down the months to arrival like a schoolkid counts down days to Christmas.
It was certainly worth the wait. Our 2016 car isn’t as hard-edged as Steve McQueen’s 390GT but we’re not driving furiously about San Fran, nor are we terrorising South Auckland for that matter.
As the photos show, we took few chances with the spec. Unstriped Magnetic Grey paint and Ebony alloys lend a whiff of menace and an auto box shifts our occasional bruiser-cruiser. Of course, a vocal V8 simply had to rumble ominously under the bonnet so Ford’s Ecoboost alternative never entered the conversation.
Finding space for the Mustang in our Keeper convoy felt as natural as leading a horse to water. It remains a good fit.
