2016 FORD MUSTANG GT (2)

The galloping pony took a big stride forward for 2016. We’re convinced of this car’s enduring appeal.

The general view is that the current generation Mustang has a handsome shape, a great stance and attractive detailing. The Fastback, in particular, looks nicely proportioned from any angle so you can appreciate its instant popularity. Our three-year-old still attracts plenty of admirers and it’s not just wistful baby-boomers who sit up and take notice.

The body is characteristically long in the bonnet and relatively short in the boot lid. It’s quite long at 4.78m but broad, too, the width emphasised by a low roofline and sleek front and rear pillars. A wide rear track and muscular haunches add to the effect. The shallow glasshouse is right up at a driver’s shoulder level so you feel as though you’re seated low.

Design hallmarks are prominent, chiefly the trapezoidal radiator grille with pony badge, the power-domed bonnet and tri-bar tail lights with punchy LEDs. The nose carries daytime running lights and prominent air scoops have been integrated to improve aerodynamics.

Inside, there are some obvious nods to the past but the first impression is of a comfort-first approach thanks to broad, well-padded chairs and ample space for four. The classic double-brow dash features large, round dials and a row of aluminium-look toggle switches stretch across the console. There’s a mix of old and new with metallic finishes alongside expanses of vinyl but the multimedia system with sat-nav is up to date with its eight-inch colour touchscreen. A starter button replaces a key twist for waking the heavy-breathing engine.

Had we chosen the six-speed manual, we’d have an old-fashioned ball shifter to work the gate. We quite like the mechanical throw but remain satisfied with the smoothness and shift speed of the automatic.
